sand in uncomfortable places: the meme

So you need a vacation. The weather's nice, so why not hit the beach?

So here are the rules:

1. Comment with your character and put their name and canon in the subject line.
2. Do beach stuff with whoever threads with you. Go tanning. Collect seashells. Have a picnic. Swim. Surf. Visit the little resort. Almost drown. Reenact Baywatch. Get stranded at sea in a canoe. Day or night. Do your own thing.
3. There is no need for RNG here, just have fun. :)

Mom said I needed to have an adult with me to go over by the tide pools.

[ she's begging. sweetly and subtly. with her eyes and a big smile. ]

All right, all right. [He hauls himself up from the towel and stands.] Those over there?

[ Aaaaaaaw yeah. Score. ]

They're down by the water and over behind the rocks.

[ Which means climbing over or around the rocks. No wonder she needs an adult. ]

[Jesus. Clearly.] Those rocks don't look good... [Contemplating...and decision.] Why don't we swim out around them? We won't fall and get hurt that way.

[Yes swim out to where it's eight feet deep to avoid the rocks, this is totally the ideal plan. Cersei you really should have specified non-Jaime adults.]

[ Oh... Now there's some hesitance. ]

I don't like swimming. What if there are sharks out there?

[ Joffrey spent the entire car ride over here convincing her and Tommen that there were vicious man eating sharks everywhere. ]

There's no sharks, sweetheart. [There are.] We'd see them, wouldn't we? [They wouldn't.] And even if there was the biggest Great White Shark in the world out there, he wouldn't be interested in you unless you were doing something to look like prey, and you won't be. [At least that part is true.]

[ She whines, but, hey, she's scared. ]

Joffrey says there are sharks. He said they'd eat me in one bite if I got in the water! I just want to see the tide pool - there are no sharks in the tide pool!

Joffrey is rude. [It's better than "shithead" or "mean bitch" which are the first two things that came to mind.] And he's wrong. I know a lot more about sharks than he does.

Would it be better if you held onto me like a piggyback ride and I swam? [That's basically what he'd make her do to get over the rocks, only he's way better at swimming than climbing.]

But what if he's - [ Right? Got a point? ...Something like that, but at the offer to carry her, Myrcella quiets and raises a hand to chew on a pinky nail. The other hand goes to hold his. ]

...And you won't drop me?

I won't drop you. [He starts heading toward the water. Jaime's actually a very good swimmer, he just doesn't get a chance to swim that often.]

...Okay.

[ Seems a little silly to ask him to pinky promise - and wasn't she just chewing her nail? her mother hated when she did that - so she just follows him quietly. ]

[Jaime wades in until they're up to her waist, then takes a knee, water coming up to his chest.] All right, hop on.

[ It's like Uncle Jaime is suddenly the biggest, best jungle gym, and she climbs that like a champ! ]

[Jaime stands again just in time to prevent them both getting a faceful of wave, then starts wading out deeper again.] Okay, whenever there's a wave I'll swim over it if I can, but be ready to hold your nose and close your eyes just in case. And you have to hold still and not get scared or you could push me under, think you can do that?

[ She doesn't feel much like talking - she's still scared, and watching the water for waves and sharks has just gotten far too far too overwhelming - so Myrcella simply buries her face in his hair and nods. ]

[Once Jaime gives up on wading and starts swimming, it's awkward for a minute while he figures out how to adjust for a person clinging to him, but pretty soon they're moving along at a good clip and swimming right over most of the waves -- although yes, occasionally one breaks and they have to go under. But he gets them out around the rocks and swims up to the pools from the water edge, standing and letting Myrcella off once they're in shallows enough to see the bottom.]

There, that wasn't so bad, right?

[ She whined whenever they came back up from under a wave, and is shaking slightly when she slides off his back, but after a few quick glances around - just checking for sharks - she shakes her head. ]

N...o. It wasn't. And - look! The pools all look so cool!

[ She clambers up on the sides and leans over the side of one of the larger pools, 'ooh'ing appropriately. ]

Look, Uncle Jaime. That's a starfish.

[Jaime follows her, more slowly, watching to be sure she doesn't slip.] I see. He looks... [Boring. Lazy. Lonely? wtf.] Cool.

That's an urchin.

[ she points, and after a healthy five seconds of pointing, she turns and smiles at him. ]

I have an ocean creature book. I brought it with me in the car.

[Jaime isn't as utterly fascinated by this as Myrcella...all urchins make him think of are his friend who climbed onto a rock, or something, that was covered in them and had to have some absurd number of spines removed from his hands and feet, plus the graphic description of the poison in them. But he's doing his best at pretending to be interested, he promises.]

Yeah? He looks dangerous.

He's pointy - so don't touch him. But they used to use urchins to dye things colors.

[ ...right? well, she remembers something along the line of that. ]

[ she'll insist she's right anyway. while reaching into the pool to touch the starfish. ]

Don't hurt him. [But she knows enough not to touch the dangerous things, so he wanders off, looking in other pools for anything else interesting.] There's a few fish in this one.

[ She laughs - in an of course I'm not going to hurt him! sort of way - but at the mention of fish, she perks up. ]

Are they fish? Or mini sharks?

Little silversides, I think. [He bends, squinting.] And a lot of barnacles.

[ Now she's actually getting up, and stepping around some crevices and rocks until she stands right next to Jaime. ]

I didn't read about silversides in my book. [ But now she's very interested, and squats to splash at one and watch it swim away. ]
